The Back Field

Jon Challoner

I will always remember the enormous space we had to run and play – particularly the wild, unkempt area we referred to as the “Back Field.” With trees, bush, huge rocks and hills, this was the place for the most daring of adventures. From games to movie reenactments to pure fantasy, the back field was the perfect backdrop to anything we were imagining. Also, since our exploits were often a little suspicious, there was always the exhilarating danger of getting nabbed by the teacher supervisor! Now that I live in the midst of downtown Toronto and work as an educator myself in urban schools, I am forever grateful for having grown up among nature and for having the freedom as a child.
