Hornby Island Camping

Wendy de Candole

In the spring of 1994 Jan Graham took her Grade 1-2 class to Hornby Island to camp for three days. My son Derek de Candole was in Grade 2 and very excited about the trip. Unfortunately it poured rain. On the second day we all huddled in the shelter debating whether to take the last ferry at 6 pm back to Vancouver Island. Six o’clock came and went and Jan sent all the kids to their tents with respective parent volunteers. I had three boys in my tent and they were literally bouncing off the walls with excitement. Periodically Jan would come by, unzip the door and throw in some books to read. The rain continued unabated but after a couple of hours and several books, we all fell asleep soothed by the gentle sound of rain on the tent.
